Disclaimer... i'm on page 153 out of 253 pages but apparently Amazon thinks i should have an opinion by now since they just emailed me about writing a review. i was excited to learn all about the Sacred Band... its inner workings, its rank and file, its camaraderie... so much so that i pre-ordered the book. what it actually is -- so far -- is a history of the times during which the Sacred Band existed. there have been about two pages dedicated to its specific origin, and a few pages since then recounting battles they were part of, but that's it. there is nothing -- so far -- about its inner workings, its rank and file, its camaraderie. i'm trying to stick with it because the times in which they were extant are interesting, but i've lost hope of actually learning anything about the Sacred Band itself.Ok, finished the book... and the adage is proved... THIS BOOK IS NOT ABOUT THE SACRED BAND OF THEBES. When I saw that a book had finally been written about the Theban Sacred Band I knew I had to have it. I had been wishing someone would write one about this legendary fighting unit. So it was with excitement I dived into this book. I was quickly disappointed. I enjoyed reading about the rise and fall of Thebes from 380 to 326 bc, but this book had nothing to do with the Sacred Band. It was a retelling of the rise and fall of theban hegemony in the 300s. I still enjoyed the retelling but the book should have been called the rise and fall of Thebes in the 300s bc. No mention of the Sacred Band other than what battles they fought in and a retelling of Pelopidas life which you could gain from Plutarchs life of Pelopidas. Very disappointed. The author also rushed through the final battle of Chaeronea where the band fought to the last man and was ultimately buried together with a monument over their burial to this day. Just a paragraph about how Philip defeated them to a man and was sad they all died…..but they have a monument!
